Powering More Than Just Batteries: How Battery World Caloundra Stays Connected To The Community

For David Thomas, running Battery World Caloundra has never been just about selling batteries – it's about being part of the fabric of the Sunshine Coast community.

"We try to be connected to what the needs of the community are," David says. "Supporting local is important to us."

The philosophy, learned from his father David "Crock" Thomas during their time operating the family's Gladstone store together, has guided the Caloundra operation for the past decade. And as the region has transformed from a sleepy seaside town to one of Australia's fastest-growing areas, that commitment to community has only deepened.

Growing alongside the Sunshine Coast

When David took over the store in 2014, the Caloundra area was still finding its feet. Today, the Caloundra West-Baringa region where Battery World now operates has experienced a remarkable 60 per cent population boom since 2021 alone.

That growth led to the store's relocation in September 2023 from Caloundra Shopping Centre to the rapidly developing suburb of Baringa at 5 Carnegie Street – a move that puts Battery World right at the heart of the community it serves.

Listening to what locals need

Being connected means evolving with your customers. Over the past decade, David has watched the Sunshine Coast community's needs shift and change, and Battery World Caloundra has adapted accordingly.

"The camping side of things has just flourished and grown, and it's continued to evolve every year with new parts and better technology," he explains. "We've also seen increased demand for portable power stations and secondary power systems, especially with the severe weather we've experienced."

From families heading out for weekend camping trips to households preparing for storm season, Battery World Caloundra has become the go-to destination for locals who need reliable power solutions – whether that's for cars, 4X4s, motorbikes, boats, camping gear or everyday technology.

Giving back where it matters

For David and his team, community connection goes far beyond the counter. Battery World Caloundra is now in its second year as a major sponsor of the Sunshine Coast Falcons, proudly supporting local rugby league. The store has also backed the Caloundra Veterans Golf Club, the Caloundra Chamber of Commerce, and even local Muay Thai athletes chasing their sporting dreams.

A family business with community at heart

As David raises his two young sons, Nate (5) and Eli (2), on the Sunshine Coast, he's thinking about the future – both for his family and for the community around them.

And while he jokes about his eldest working at the store for free in a decade's time, the real focus remains the same as it was 10 years ago: staying connected, listening to what locals need, and being there to power the community through whatever comes next.

Because when you're truly connected to your community, you're not just selling batteries – you're helping power people's lives, adventures, and livelihoods. And that's something worth staying charged up about.
