Winter Camping Tips for Your Seasonal Family Break
With the mid-year school break approaching, plenty of Aussie families are planning a camping getaway. Winter camping offers a unique experience with quiet bushland, misty mornings, and crisp, starlit nights. To make the most of it, being prepared is key—especially when it comes to powering your camp.
When temperatures drop and the nights get longer, having reliable power isn’t just convenient. It becomes essential. Whether you’re trying to keep the fridge cold, run a few lights, or boil water for that all-important morning coffee, your battery setup can make or break the experience.
According to Battery World ambassador John Kilby, a good electrical setup is at the heart of a smooth camping trip.
“Running additional electrical equipment off your car’s starter battery is a really bad idea,” he said. “It might be fine for charging your mobile phone whilst driving, but it’s absolutely not adapted to the sustained power outputs needed over a long period of time like when camping.” You don’t want to hear that dreaded click-click from the starter motor after draining your starting battery overnight.
As John Kilby explains, your car’s starter battery is a bit like a camera flash. It’s perfect for short, intense bursts of power but not great for keeping your camp running all night.
“What you need is a battery better suited to long periods of sustained output, this is where a deep-cycle battery works best. They’re designed to give a steady flow of power over a longer period of time, but not suited to starting a car engine. This is where a dual battery setup comes into play, with two batteries, one dedicated starter battery and one deep cycle battery which gives you the best of both worlds.”
Once you’ve got a dedicated battery for camping, the next step is finding a way to keep it charged and healthy. That’s where solar comes into play, especially for off-grid setups.
There are plenty of charging options available, including solar panels, DC-to-DC chargers, and battery monitors that let you track how much power is coming in and going out. If you want an all-in-one solution, there are also units that handle both solar and DC charging in one system.
Keep in mind that winter conditions can affect solar performance.
“It’s worth considering that the days are shorter so there’s less charging time,” he added. “The longer nights also mean you’ll run the lights and other accessories longer so that’ll be a bigger drain as well. The sun is also lower so solar panels need to be tilted towards the low winter sun and they may get more readily blocked by trees or hills.”
What Equipment Do You Need to Power Your Campsite?
- A good quality deep cycle battery – This is essential for running your fridge, lights, and other gear. Choose based on your power needs, trip length, and budget.
- A battery box – It safely houses your battery and gives you easy access to USB ports and DC outlets. The Hard Korr Heavy Duty Battery Box is a great pick for its rugged build and multiple connection options.
- Solar panel or blanket – Add renewable power to your setup. The Hard Korr 200W Portable Solar Blanket is compact but powerful enough to support even a large campsite.
- Inverter – If you plan to run 240V appliances like laptops or small power tools, you’ll need an inverter. Make sure the inverter matches your device wattage.
- A good camping fridge – Keep your food and drinks cold even on longer trips. Pre-cool the fridge before heading out for better efficiency. The EcoFlow Glacier Portable Fridge is a reliable, high-performance option.
- Camping light kit – Choose LED lights with remote switches and anti-bug settings. They use less power and keep your camp well-lit without draining your battery.
