Boaties Urged To Perform Crucial Maintenance Checks Before Hitting The Water

As Aussies gear up for another busy boating season, authorities and experts are reminding everyone that safety starts well before you hit the water - and that begins with checking your batteries.

With warmer weather and summer holidays just around the corner, Australia is heading into peak boating season. Battery World is proudly supporting Marine Rescue NSW in encouraging boaties to take the time for essential safety checks. A simple battery inspection could be the difference between a fun day out and a call for rescue.

Last year alone, Marine Rescue NSW completed thousands of rescues, many of which were emergencies that could have been prevented with basic preparation. Acting Deputy Commissioner Dan Duemmer says around 60% of marine emergencies could be avoided if skippers checked their equipment - especially their batteries.

“We love seeing new boaties enjoying the water,” said Act. Dep. Comm. Duemmer.

“My top advice for anyone going boating this summer is to be prepared and plan ahead. Make sure your engine is serviced, you’ve got enough fuel, your battery is in good working order, always wear a life jacket and carry the correct safety gear.”

Kent Carr, Battery World Black Wall franchise partner and local boating expert, says it’s vital to check the current - both in the water and in your battery - before you launch.

“One of the most common reasons we see people for boating issues is a battery that’s been left over winter and drained,” Carr shared.

“If you’re heading out on the water, make sure your boat or jet ski battery is in good condition. You don’t want to end up stranded with a flat battery.”

Kent’s top tips to get boating-ready this summer:

  • Get your battery checked to ensure it’s in good condition.
  • Charge your battery if it’s been sitting unused over winter.
  • Use a maintenance or triple charger to keep it healthy during downtime.
  • Watch for signs of failure, such as low voltage or the engine not starting even when lights work.
  • Carry a lithium jump starter as a backup in case your battery fails on the water.

Don’t let a flat battery ruin your day on the water. Visit your local Battery World store for a free battery check and expert advice, so you can set sail with confidence this summer.
