How to Store Your Boat or Jet Ski for Winter

As the cooler months roll in, it's time to properly prepare your boat or jet ski for storage. A little effort now can help prevent costly repairs, extend the life of your equipment, and ensure you're ready to hit the water when the warmer weather returns.

1. Remove and Maintain Your Battery

Your marine battery is one of the most important components to look after during winter.

  • Remove the battery from your boat or jet ski
  • Store it in a cool, dry place
  • Clean the terminals to prevent corrosion

This simple step helps protect your battery and prevents unnecessary drain while your vessel isn't in use.

2. Keep Your Battery Charged (The Right Way)

Batteries naturally lose charge over time, and leaving them flat can cause permanent damage.

What to do:

  • Use a smart or maintenance charger (trickle charger)
  • Keep the battery topped up throughout storage
  • Check it every 4–6 weeks if not on continuous charge

What to avoid:

  • Letting the battery go completely flat
  • Using outdated chargers that can overcharge
  • Leaving the battery connected where it may slowly drain

Pro tip: A smart charger will automatically regulate the charge level, keeping your battery in optimal condition all winter.

3. Give It a Thorough Clean

Before storing your vessel:

  • Wash down the exterior with fresh water
  • Remove salt, dirt, and grime
  • Clean and dry all compartments

This helps prevent corrosion and keeps everything in top condition.

4. Treat the Fuel System

Fuel can degrade when left sitting for long periods.

  • Add a fuel stabiliser
  • Run the engine briefly to circulate it
  • Top up the tank to reduce condensation

5. Change Oil and Fluids

Old oil can contain contaminants that damage your engine over time.

  • Change the engine oil and filter
  • Check coolant and other fluids
  • Inspect for any leaks

6. Protect Against Moisture

Moisture is one of the biggest risks during storage.

  • Use a breathable cover
  • Store in a dry, sheltered area
  • Use moisture absorbers if needed

7. Inspect Key Components

Before storing your boat or jet ski:

  • Check hoses, belts, and seals
  • Lubricate moving parts
  • Tighten loose fittings

8. Store It Safely

Choose a secure storage location:

  • Indoors is ideal
  • If outdoors, ensure it's well covered and protected
  • Remove valuables and electronics

9. Plan for an Easy Return to the Water

A little preparation now makes things easier later.

  • Keep a checklist of what you've done
  • Plan a battery check before the season starts
  • Address any maintenance issues early
