Heading Out on the Water This Spring? Your Essential Marine Checklist
Spring is here, the weather is warming up and it's the perfect time to get back out on the water.
Whether you're planning a weekend of fishing, a family day out, a coastal cruise or simply making the most of the warmer weather, there's nothing better than getting out on the boat and enjoying the outdoors.
But before you head to the boat ramp, it's worth taking a few minutes to make sure everything is ready to go. After periods of less frequent use, a quick check of your boat, battery and safety equipment can help you avoid unwanted surprises once you're on the water.
As part of our Power Your Outdoor Passion campaign, Battery World has put together an essential marine checklist to help you get ready for your next adventure.
1. Check your marine battery
Your battery plays an important role in keeping your boat's electrical systems running, so it's one of the first things worth checking before you head out.
Make sure your battery is fully charged, securely mounted and free from any obvious signs of damage or wear. Check the terminals and connections for corrosion and make sure everything is secure.
If your boat hasn't been used regularly, don't assume the battery will be ready to go. Batteries can lose charge while sitting unused, which is why checking your battery before heading out is an important part of your pre-trip routine.
Not sure whether your marine battery is still up to the job? Your local Battery World team can help you check your battery and find the right option for your setup.
2. Check your safety equipment
Before you leave the boat ramp, make sure your essential safety equipment is on board, accessible and in good working order.
Your checklist should include:
- Life jackets
- First aid kit
- Fire extinguisher
- Flares and other required safety equipment
Check expiry dates where applicable and make sure everyone on board knows where the safety equipment is located.
Taking a few minutes to check your safety equipment before you leave can give you greater peace of mind while you're out on the water.
3. Check the weather and plan your trip
A great day on the water starts with a little preparation.
Before heading out, check the latest weather and water conditions and make sure your planned route is suitable for your boat and experience level.
It's also a good idea to let someone know where you're going and when you expect to return, particularly if you're heading somewhere remote.
Make sure your navigation equipment, GPS or maps are ready to go and that you have a reliable way to communicate while you're out on the water.
4. Give your boat and trailer a check
Before launching, take a few minutes to inspect the key components of your boat and trailer.
Check your:
- Fuel and fuel lines
- Engine
- Bungs
- Bilge pump
- Anchor and anchor line
- Trailer
- Trailer tyres and lights
It's much easier to identify and fix a problem while you're still at home than after you've launched.
5. Pack the essentials
Finally, make sure you've got everything you need for a comfortable day on the water.
Depending on your trip, this could include:
- Plenty of food and drinking water
- Sunscreen, hats and other sun protection
- Communication equipment
- A suitable tool kit
- Any additional equipment required for your trip
A little extra preparation can make a big difference once you're out on the water, particularly if you're planning to spend the whole day or a weekend away.
Don't forget your marine battery
When you're busy checking the boat, it's easy to overlook the battery – but it's an important part of your pre-trip checklist.
If your marine battery is showing signs of age, struggling to hold charge or simply isn't performing like it used to, it's worth having it checked before your next day on the water.
