It’s always good to have access to experts when we need it, but experts have a way of making things look so simple we think we could do it ourselves. You just put your hand here and foot there and Bob’s your uncle.
This is known as unconscious incompetence: we don’t know what we don’t know. It’s not until we try to replicate what the expert did that we discover we don’t know much at all. Now if this incompetence applies to something like making a cake or hammering a nail, there’ll be no harm done. But what if we mistakenly think we’re capable of doing something that has an element of danger?
